How to connect your Apple Mac to the
internet
Please Note: These instructions are for setting up the
Internet on your Apple Mac only. For the Windows version please click here.
- Apple Mac OS
Details are
given below for configuring your Apple Computer using OS X and 9.x. The
instructions differ, so make sure you use the appropriate version.
Note: Cross-over cables will NOT work - only straight-through
ethernet cables. These have 8-pins (the little metal strips), unlike a modem
cable which has 2-4 pins and possibly a BT connector on one end. Cables can be
obtained from the Residential Offices if you do not have one.
- Mac OS X Network Setup
Pull
down the Apple Menu (top left) and select System Preferences. Click on the
Network icon. Next, pull down the Location pop-up menu and select Automatic.
Pull down the Configure pop-up menu and select Built-in Ethernet.
If the lock icon (bottom left) is locked, make sure that you click it and
enter your password to unlock it. This will allow you to save the changes you
make in the following steps.
Click the TCP/IP tab, and within this tab, pull down the Configure pop-up
menu and select Using DHCP. To test, simply run a TCP/IP client such as
Internet Explorer or Safari. If problems occur, double-check the TCP/IP
settings.
Setting Up Internet Access on Mac OS 8 & 9
Start up the `TCP IP` control panel (found within the Control
Panels item revealed by clicking on the apple in the top left corner).
Change the pull-down menu to the right of the `Connect via` tag to your
Ethernet card (Usually `Built-in Ethernet`).
Ensure your machine is set to configure `Using DHCP Server`. If you have a
`Use 802.3` option, please make certain it is deselected.
