How to connect your Windows Computer to the internet

Please Note: These instructions are for setting up the Internet on your Windows computer only. For the Apple Mac version please click here.

  • Make sure you have the right hardware

In order to connect your computer to the internet you will need a working Network Interface Card (NIC) in you computer. This should be connected to the data socket in your room with an RJ45/Cat5 Ethernet cable (see diagram below).

Note: Cross-over cables will NOT work - only straight-through ethernet cables. These have 8-pins (the little metal strips), unlike a modem cable which has 2-4 pins and possibly a BT connector on one end. Cables can be obtained from the Residential Offices if you do not have one.

  • Configure your network settings

Depending on your computer settings you may now be able to open your browser.

If the internet does not work you will have to change your TCP/IP settings as follows:

    1) To configure TCP/IP settings click "Start"
    2) Click "Control Panel"
    3) Click "Network Connections"

Under "Lan or High-Speed Internet" double click on your Local Area Connection. Once opened click the "Properties" button.

Under the box labelled "This connection uses the following items:" select the TCP/IP protocol and click "Properties".

"Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" should be selected. Click "OK".

Note: If "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" is ticked, your computer may be allowing other users on the network to access your files. It is recommended that this is turned off.

When you have finished configuring network settings click "OK". You should now be connected to the internet.
